Grave of Samuel Everitt Rogers in Carlton, Texas Would
you be interested in hearing the story about Samuel Everitt Rogers, born 1809,
who was killed and scalped one hundred and forty-three years ago by Comanche Indians?
He met his fate on May 03, 1863, in Carlton, Texas. Samuel Everitt Rogers' grandson
and namesake found the grave once again in 1941 and placed a bronze plaque there,
which includes some historical information. Then ca 1975 a six foot chain link
fence was erected by descendants from Houston, Texas, and California. The grave
qualifies for Historic Texas Cemetery Designation because it is over 50 years
old and has been maintained. I am in the process of acquiring that designation
to protect the grave forever.
Since 1985, several generations have been
visiting this lonely spot in the middle of a cow pasture every Thursday before
Easter to pay homage to Samuel. |

He
had been part of the Texas Militia who helped guard the pioneers from Indians
during those trying times. Samuel was returning to his son's home after one of
those vigils when the Indians cornered him. His son, James Carroll Rogers, was
away fulfilling his duties as a Texas Ranger and had left his own family unprotected.
The
story has been written in "Indian Fights on the Texas Frontier," a book by Elias
Deaton. Another mention of Samuel Everitt Rogers' cruel demise was in Homer Stephen's
book, "Fragments of History-Erath County," Copyright 1966. Homer was, of course,
a well-known citizen of Stephenville,
Texas. The town was actually named after a member of Homer's family.
The
Houston Post ran an article in 1963, the 100th anniversary of Samuel's death,
which was written by Ed Kilman in his articles called "Texas Heartbeat."
This year, 2006, we have a new Rogers descendant coming to Texas from Idaho, to
join my daughter from Oregon, my son from Massachusetts, and six cousins from
Texas. I come from Florida each year.
The grave is located off FM 2823
in Carlton, Texas, about two or so miles from the Carlton Cemetery.
Thanks
for listening...
