Letters to the Editor |
Where
we have yet to hear a discouraging word. Unsolicited,
uncensored and occasionally outrageous comments on and about Texas from the people
who know it best. As many of our readers who wrote to us with
simple comments or suggestions have evolved into friendships, many of our best
letters have become too personal to publish. |

Editor's note: The volume of our email prevents
us from posting all and on a regular basis. There
have been many letters between March and Now yet to be posted.

13, 2001 Subject: Fargo-Doans
Crossing page The "curious canine" shown on the Fargo-Doans Crossing
page is named "Sugar"--an apt name for a very sweet natured pooch. We live across
the street from the Doans marker and adobe. Thanks for putting her picture on
the net. Tom N. Friday, July 27, 2001 Subject: Great web site
I happened onto your web site while surfing for info about Texas towns where my
ancestors lived in the middle 1800s, La Vernia (Post Oak), Sutherland Springs,
and Nockenut. Found some interesting pics of La Vernia and Sutherland
Springs. Also stumbled onto the story about the double hanging in Bellville.
Very fascinating historical stuff that helps to put my heritage into perspective.
Thanks. - Clayton H
Thursday, July 26, 2001 Subject: Fayetteville, TX I am a decendent
of James P. Shaver. His daughter Emma Lou married Carroll M. Breeding, and his
daughter Mary A. Breeding married my Grandfather Clarence L. Collins. The Breeding
home place is right outside of Fayetteville. We had a reunion there a few years
ago. I really enjoyed seeing pictures from Fayetteville; it's like being back
there. l'lI look forward to seeing new things on your site. - Sandra Prochnow
Note: James Shaver was Fayetteville's Founder.
Thursday, July 26, 2001 Subject: Ft. Worth Flatiron Building - 1907
Thank you for the Great article and photo's of my favorite building in the entire
metroplex!!!!! As a lover of the unique, and a D/FW designer for the last couple
of decades, I've had a fascination with the Ft. Worth Flatiron Building since
my first sight of it. - S. Hanks Wednesday, July 25, 2001 Subject:
Hempstead Texas I have the only oil Painting of Doctor Hempstead ,
whom the town was named after. Doctor Hempstead never came to the town of Hempstead
because of a yellow fever breakout in Portsmouth Ohio where he practiced medicine
. Hempstead was once known as Six Shooter Junction , because of the people shooting
out the windows on the train as it pulled into town . - jim r.

Subject: Letter to the Editor for Texas Escapes Editor, I have written before
to express the excellent content, style and on line experience of your Texas
Escapes website. That was in October 2000. Now over 6 months later, I would
again like to express how impressive your web site is AND to congratulate the
determination of both the editor and the staff who both must be putting in many,
long hours traveling, photographing and chronicling the many
added small towns since last October. Clearly, both of you have dedicated
a large portion of your life to the building of the best Texas Towns website.
Your long hours and dedication show on every page of the TE website and shows
in the growth of the size of the TE website. You are doing a massive public
service to small town Texas, and to the millions of viewers who turn to Texas
Escapes for information, and enjoyment. I said it before and will again, Texas
Escapes is like a shining beacon or lighthouse showing the way to small town Texas.
Keep up the excellent work and remember that all us viewers truly appreciate your
hard work. - Mike Gerrick Sunday,
April 29, 2001 Subject: Love your website!!!! I have been "stuck"
in your website for almost 8 full hours now. I am fascinated with all of it. I
am particularly fond of the "Rooms
with a Past." I would like to offer some suggesions for future articles. I
have always been fascinated with these old, charming structures, and wondered
why each of them eventually closed. Baker Hotel, Mineral Wells Falls Hotel (Hilton),
Mariln Settles Hotel, Big Spring Hilton Hotel, Plainview Cactus Hotel (Hilton),
and San Angelo. Keep up the GREAT work - Arnold Ziffel Friday,
