Memorial
Auditorium and Stadium
Goliad
State Park
The memorial auditorium adjacent to Goliad
State Park is as pristine as the memorial museums in Austin
and Corpus
Christi. A plain rectangular box, it combines the austere architecture
of the Mission Nuestra Senora del Espiritu Santo de Zuniga across
the highway, with simple meaningful embellishments that tell the history
of the area. Designed by Samuel Vosper and Raiford Stripling, the
memorial was financed by a state allocation of $50,000 and a federal
allocation of $20,000. The WPA added $5,000 to build sidewalks, parking,
roads, and the athletic field, and clubrooms under the stadium.

The plaster work was done by Hannibal Pianta with HugoVilla, sculptor.

Hannibal Pianta was was born in Boccioletto, Italy in 1875. He immigrated
to the United States around 1905, and set up shop at 509 Leal St.,
in San Antonio, Texas,
with his father John, who already had an established business producing,
primarily, ornamental capitals. John was the chief plasterer during
the construction of the Texas
State Capitol Building, as well as the Georgia State Capitol.

Next trip I will check out the stadium, and try to get inside the
auditorium; a huge carnival was in progress when I took these photos.
The facility is still enjoyed and maintained by all.
This is the site of the Goliad County Fair. |
