History in a Pecan Shell

Originally named Big Valley, Texas, the name was changed to remember settler J.M. Buckner and son who drowned in the Brazos River.

A combination cotton gin / gristmill opened in 1881 and Buckner developed as retail center for farmers.

The community was granted a post office in 1884 but was closed just after WWI.

The only population figure available is from the mid 1890s when there were seventy five citizens.

The community still appears on maps.

Photographer's Note:
"I'm not sure Buckner was really a town, but it is on my map as one. It would have been located about 13 miles southwest of Weatherford about a mile east of FM 1189 on Buckner Road. The street sign and Holder Cemetery were the only things I could find of it. The Buckner Cemetery is on private property and inaccessible to me." - Barclay Gibson
