History
in a Pecan Shell
First settlement occured sometime before the Civil War. Named for
a blacksmith named Sam Callis, the community had a post office granted
in 1873. The population was 300 in 1883 and the town had most essential
businesses. For reasons not known, the post office closed and the
population fell by two-thirds by 1902. Oil
was discovered in the 1920s, but if there was a boom, it was short
lived.
The population level stayed between 100 and 200 through the 1970s
when it decreased to a mere 68 but by 1988 it reached a high-water
mark of 329.
