History in

Miles Cope, one
of the areas original settlers is the town’s namesake.
Originally a mile west of its present location, the community was
surveyed and platted in the 1870s.
Copeville received a post office in 1878 and in 1886 the Gulf, Colorado
and Santa Fe Railroad laid tracks a mile east of the community. This
resulted in a move of both businesses and residences to the tracks.
By 1915 the population is thought to have reached 300, but by the
mid 1920s it had declined to less than 250. During WWII
the decline continued – reaching 150 in 1943. From the mid 1980s the
population has been given as 106. |
