History in
a Pecan Shell
Named
to honor early settler Harrell Cundiff, the town was first settled
in the mid-1850s. Indian raids and the threat of Indian raids caused
residents to flee and it wasn't until the mid 1870s, that people started
to return. A permanent townsite was established when a man named Walker
Moore broke up his property and platted a townsite in the early 1890s.
Cundiff's post office was in operation from 1891 to 1918. The community
also had four stores and a school along with a blacksmith and gin.
From 1940 to1988 the town's population figure was estimated to be
50 Cundiffites. It has since decreased to the 2000 estimate of 45. |
