History in a Pecan Shell

Czechs and Germans settled here in the 1880s. A post office opened in 1894. By 1900 the population remained at a mere 18 residents. The post office closed in 1906.

By the 1920s Elk’s population had increased to 75 but fell to 38 in the 1930s. It appears the people who left returned by the end of the decade since it returned back to 75.

The Elk school district merged with the Axtell district in the mid 1950s. It is now labeled a “dispersed rural community.”
