History in
a Pecan Shell
Originally named
Bolen Switch, local fruit growers petitioned for a change of
name in 1901. The post office took the new name when it was granted
in 1903. The first fruit nursery took root in the region back in the
1870s and 1880s.
By 1914 the town was served by two general stores and besides selling
fruit trees, the town also shipped lumber. It wasn’t until the 1930s
when the town reached 160 residents and it didn’t incorporate until
the mid 1960s when its population was still just 150. By 1988 the
population had reached 395, declining to 349 by 1990. |

Fruitvale
I lived in Fruitvale, Texas went to school up through 5th grade.
We always called the school Mrs Hallie's when we were growing up.
We lived on 5th a couple times in different houses, one even had
outside toilet. They were own by Mrs Hallie even though that was
her first name that's what we called her. - Bonnie Smith, January

The old Williams General Store
[Above] photo shows the old Williams General Store in Fruitvale.
Run By Hallie and Jane Randall when I was a child. I believe Mrs.
Hallie inherited the store from her husband. Mrs. Jane was there
in the store in '05. This picture shows the store empty and painted.
It held many pieces of the town's history, including P.O. boxes
from the old post office and the largest old juke box I'd ever seen.
I used to walk from the elementary school (across hwy 80 and the
train tracks) to wait for my father to pick me up, every day. I'd
sit on the old Coca-Cola top-loader and watch tv until he arrived.
I left town for N.Y. at the age of 12. Great memories. Thanks, Christopher
