History
in a Pecan Shell
Established in the early 1850s, there wasn’t too much
going on until their post office opened. The town’s namesake was Tom
Hester.
Hester seems to have peaked in 1900 when it supported a general store
and blacksmith and not much else. It wasn’t until 1915 (after the
post office was long discontinued) that Hester could boast of 25 residents.
Two stores were reported operating during the Great Depression but
there were no estimates on population. After WWII,
Hester hit a new high of 50 residents, but it wasn’t to last. It was
dropped from most maps by the 1960s and houses in the area today are
well scattered. |
