History in
a Pecan Shell
Named
after the middle name of the town's first postmaster (James Hughes),
the community had been known as Locust Grove prior to 1893.
The population around 1900 was a healthy 110 residents where it remained
more or less through WWII.
A sharp decline set in, reducing the number of Hiramites to a mere
30. It has remained at that level to the present and only the Baptist
Church and cemetery remain with a nursing home according to some sources. |
