History in
a Pecan Shell
Settled in the 1830s, the land was originally part of the Peter’s
Colony. In 1873 the Houston and Texas Central Railroad arrived
when the community was known as Summit. The town received a
post office that same year.
Settler Jabes Haning donated land for a depot and in 1876 the town
was renamed for a railroad employee. Eight years later the town incorporated.
The population reached 450 by 1890 and 521 by 1904. The town had all
essential businesses including several hotels and newspapers. By 1914
the town was a stop on Interurban service between Denison
and Dallas.
From 680 residents in the early 1960s, Howe reached
2,173 for the 1990 census and over 2,400 for
2000. |
