History in
a Pecan Shell
The unusual name comes from one of the numerous post
office application rejections of the 1800s. A local hero named Jimmie
Johnson had had the railroad honor him with the designation of Johnson
Station. The townsfolk wanted it continued with the post office designation.
The postal authorities in Washington (on-the-Potomac) wanted a shorter
name and the consensus of the town was: "If it can't be named after
a fine man like Johnson - it shouldn't be named after any man. One
of the Latin-speaking citizens suggested Nemo for "no man" and this
was accepted by the post office department.
Nemo's population never exceeded 60 persons and it was only 56 in
1990. |
