History in
a Pecan Shell
Indeed, named for
a grove of Pecan trees, the community was settled around 1884 and
the Pecan Gap Baptist Church marks that year as their beginning. Early
settlers came from Arkansas. The Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad
arrived in 1888 and built a depot. The town (almost) instantly became
a shipping point for Delta
County farmers and the population was soon approaching 500. By
1910 the population had grown to 600 but by 1929 it was back to 500,
declining to just over 400 by the mid-1930s. By 1989 the population
was 296 which has since declined to the current (2010) 203.
