History in
a Pecan Shell
In 1856 New Jersey
settler Joseph Ward settled here. In 1859 he platted the town and
named it Littleton's Springs after a pioneer family.
The name was changed to Springtown in the 1870s at popular request.
The post office was granted in 1875.
Prior to public schools, Springtown Male and Female Institute opened
in 1884 . In 1936 Springtown High School was incorporated into the
Parker County ISD. The first of many town newspapers arrived in 1881.
By 1890 the community was thriving with daily stage service to Weatherford
and a tri-weekly stage to Decatur.
The population in 1890 was a thriving 500. By 1940 it reached 800
where it slowed for many years until commuters from Ft.
Worth found that living there was worth the commute. |

Historical Marker:
Eureka Lodge
No. 371, A. F. & A. M.
The Eureka Masonic
Lodge entered into an agreement with W.L. Hutcheson to build this
two-story structure in 1897. Over the years, while the first floor
housed a variety of businesses, including Hutcheson's hardware store,
the lodge continued to occupy the second floor. Exhibiting influences
of the Romanesque revival style, the building features round-arch
windows, a detailed keystone on the upper central window, and a red
sandstone cornerstone.
