"This is
the remaining portion of the Public School at Van Alstyne TX. Built
in 1909-10, it was originally a two-story building with a basement;
as you can see the upper story was removed at some point in the past
and it is now single-story. It is full of junk and is falling apart.
The roof has holes in it and daylight can be seen throughout the building.
Newer school buildings on the block surround this building."

"The gymnasium
sits next to the Public School building (top photo). It was built
in 1909-10 at the same time as the school building and is still being
used. It is being well-cared for. A big problem for builders and owners
of large buildings over the years has been the fact that the state
of roofing hasn't progressed very far or very fast in the past century.
Van Alstyne has solved the roof maintenance problem with this metal
roof; which will last for many years with just a minimum of maintenance."
