History in a Pecan Shell

Established between 1880 and 1891 by a settler named Dave Taylor. The town was named after the town's first postmaster, Vashti Strahan when the post office opened in 1891.

By 1904 the towns two teachers taught sixty-nine students.

During the 1920s the population reached 264, and the community had an economic base of a cotton gin, three stores, a drugstore, and a blacksmith.

The economy was balanced throughout the 30s (although the post office closed during this decade) and the 40s. Postwar mobility drained the population back to 140 - a figure that it has maintained for nearly 50 years. Vashti had no businesses in operation in the late 1980s.
