History on
a Pinhead
Another one of
Bell County's Czech
settlements, Vilas had a post office operating under the name Povilas
(open from 1888-1906). The shortened name was in use by 1890 when
the community had three churches and two stores in operation. In 1903
a school had 49 pupils taught by a single teacher. By the 1940s Vilas
was down to a mere 25 citizens and only the school was open. By the
60s it had declined to just 10 and current figures would be a guess.
