History in
a Pecan Shell
Namesake J. Pinckney
Wolfe settled here around the 1870s and built a mill here. The community
was first called Wolfe's Mill but was changed when a post office
application was submitted in 1882.
The Santa Fe Railroad arrived in 1887, making the community a shipping
point. From a population of only 200 in the early 1880s, Wolfe City
grew to 1,800 by 1892. The town had all essential businesses including
a foundry newspaper and two cotton gins. The population was 1,400
around 1917 and it reached its zenith in the 20s with 1,859 citizens.
After WWII it
had decreased to 1,300 and has slowly grown to its current estimate
of 1,472. |
