History in a Pecan Shell

Although railroad towns have been named for people ranging from engineers, officials, brakemen to even the first person to detrain at a new stop (Dilley), this is the first town we're aware of that was named for the "mascot" of the first train to arrive. It was 3-year old Bennie Arnold (a little girl).

A local post office was operating by 1892. In 1896 the population was a healthy 125 residents, rising to 250 in the mid 1920s. By the late 60s it was down to148.

Ben Arnold schools consolidated with Cameron ISD in the 1970s.
