Benchly is acknowledged as the first community in Robertson County. The community was first settled by Irish immigrants between 1829 and 1834 under the name Stagger's Point.

The first cotton gin was built at Staggers Point in 1850.

Benchley was named after the freight conductor of the Houston and Texas Central Railway when the first train reached the town in 1868.

A post office was in operation from 1882 until the 1950s.

Benchley's population highwater-mark was 1960 when 270 people called the town home. From the late 60s until 1990 the population was 110.
