Louis
Polansky was once introduced to us as "The Town Worrier." We hadn't heard of a
town worrier before and we wouldn't have believed it if it wasn't Louis introducing
himself. Louis also serves as the town historian, welcoming committee and can
be seen (and heard) playing guitar occasionally at Fayetteville's festivals. Louis
as greeter stopped by and gave us vegetable plants when we first moved to town.
We took this to be an old custom insuring that newcomers would make it through
the winter and be around to pay their share of taxes next year. Our first winter
was indeed tough and it was thanks to Louis' ornamental cabbage that we're here
to write this entry. Louis has forgotten more about Fayetteville than
any 8 townspeople can collectively remember. He and his wife Irene write a column
for the La Grange paper. If there's something happening in Fayetteville - Louis
is usually leaving when we get there. Often it was Louis who caused the happening.
Recently he has told us that he's resigned his position as town worrier - we're
not sure if things have gotten better or if they've gotten so bad that he decided
worrying is useless. April 2001 © John Troesser |
