History
in a Pecan Shell
The town was founded on land belonging to Frank L. Ermis, a Bohemian
farmer, merchant and cotton buyer
who established the town after moving from Fayette
County. The post office was opened in 1894 with Mr. Ermis as postmaster,
but closed in 1899 after Mr. Ermis bought land near Engle,
Texas. The 1896 population of Hermis was given as 25. The community
was a shipping and banking point and received its mail semi-weekly.
By the mid 1930s Hermis was dropped from the county map of Gonzales
County.
Hermis was suggested for inclusion by Richard Schumann, Great Grandson
of Frank L. Ermis, founder of Hermis, Texas. |
