History in
a Pecan Shell
The bridges of
the community now provide the “presence” of the community. Once known
as Sour Springs, from the high sodium carbonate content of
the water, it was changed to the easier-to-swallow name of Soda Springs,
although no one is sure of the date.
A Sour Springs post office was in existence briefly (1857 – 1880).
The town was on maps into the 1940s when the flow of the springs was
still notable. A drastic decrease occurred between the late 40s and
the mid 1970s. |

“The Soda Springs Bridge over Plum Creek was built in 1920 and is
181’ long. As you can see, the bridge is not very approachable. I
had to climb on limbs to get the picture of the bridge deck.” - Barclay
