History on
a Pinhead
Formerly known
as Perryman's Crossing (on Cibolo Creek), the site was on the
Gonzales to San Antonio Road - built well before the Texas Revolution.
The site was little more than a ford on the creek when Ferdinand Zuehl
bought the property in the early 1870s and build a store. In the early
1880s the Clemens School was opened and a post office was granted
later that decade (1888). The post office at first used the name "School,
Texas" but in 1906 it was changed to Zuehl. It remained open four
more years after the change of name. |
An
auxiliary airfield for Randolph Field was built at Zuehl during WWII
and was later turned into a private airfield. Aerial sequences for
the 1975 Robert Redford movie The Great Waldo Pepper were filmed
at Zuehl.
Zuehl reached its high-water mark in 1945 with a population of 175.
The 1990 population was estimated near 50.
The Redeemer Cemetery is shown as being the nearest to the community. |
