| Several
months ago we found a fascinating book and scribbled down the author's name. We
would have bought it if we hadn't already blown our allowance on bread pudding
at Central Market. The note was lost somewhere between Muldoon and Plum, but we
recently got an Email from Chandra Moira Beal, the author of Splash
Across Texas. It seems our good friend and Chinese movie advisor Anne Cook
told Chandra about Texas Escapes. Anne has been advising us on foreign movies,
good, bad, and otherwise since Gene Siskel went to the Big Balcony. Ms.
Beal says she likes our "cheeky voice." Maybe she said "squeaky." We can't remember. Splash
Across Texas is entertaining, full of details and delightful photographs (we'd
like to pinch the Diving Baby). What makes it really special is its practicality.
If you haven't yet noticed, it's summer. This book can provide you with all the
information you need to re-evaluate your favorite swimming hole. Does it measure
up? Is it Salamander free? Is it a shallow relationship, or are you in over your
head? There are enough locations to consider that it could easily take you three
or four summers to visit them all. We've
added Splash Across Texas to the Texas Escapes' Traveling Library. So
whether you're swimming with salamanders, sunbathing with lizards or diving with
The Diving Baby; get a copy of Splash Across Texas. Leave that self-improvement
book at home (you know in your heart you're not going to improve). Ignore what
Oprah thinks you should read. Take a book with you that will let you read about
where you are while you're actually there. The only fault we can find with the
book is that it isn't waterproof. But then again it's still in it's first printing.
