Webster’s
Dictionary states:
Work Something produced or accomplished
by effort, exertion or exercise of will. Interview A formal
consultation usually to evaluate qualifications of an applicant. Presence
One that is present. The quality of poise and effectiveness enabling a
person to achieve a closer relationship with an audience. Change
To give a different position, course or direction to the subject involved.
Sound
complicated? All this means, if you want to work you must produce something by
effort, exertion or exercise of will. To get a job you should have a formal interview
with a prospective employer stating your qualifications to be considered. Only
by being present can you exhibit the poise and confidence to do the job. Be prepared
to change from the old to the new. In fact, exhibiting a bit of excitement in
making a change might help one get a job and a new direction in life.
Coffee Shop Story A man stated, “My son is unemployed although he has two
degrees. He sits at his computer several hours a day, clad in pajamas, barefooted,
sipping a beverage, heated by my stove, cooled by my air conditioner, eating at
my table, sleeping in my bed for free, while submitting resumes to Internet-based
prospective employers. Now if he keeps this up until age 65, he can retire and
never break a sweat in his whole life. Boy is he smart.”
Another coffee
shop regular who makes his living digging post holes, ditches, hauling hay, building
fence and riding as a cowboy, was asked how he was getting along in the big recession?
His answer, “I don’t know. I guess I’ve been too busy working to pay any attention.”
I asked another rancher, “Have you lost any money in the stock market?” He answered,
“You know I lost a yearling heifer at the sale ring last month, but they found
her and sent me a check.” By the way, he hadn’t heard about the protests against
Wall Street either.
Although it may sound trivial, we coffee drinkers
wonder when all those people get together to protest or march for whatever purpose,
where do they go to the bathroom? One cowboy says, “That’s why the parks are so
green.”
Although none of the coffee shop bunch owns much stock that I
know of, we watch it closely each day. As we understand it, the stockbrokers get
paid whether stock goes up or down each time it sells.
The largest project
in downtown Alanreed at
the moment is to apply and hopefully receive a grant to pay for constructing a
building tall enough to jump out of when the stock market takes a dive next time.
At
the moment, a jump out of our one-story buildings would only turn an ankle or
sprain a knee. Eliminating your problems permanently is hard in a one-story town.
