History
in a Pecan Shell
Named after Herman Aiken, a post office was granted in 1889. Three
years later the post office had been jointed by a school. Businesses
included a blacksmith, and sawmill. The first population figures date
from 1896 when there were 75 residents and the town had grown other
businesses, including a general store and cotton gin.
In 1909, Aiken lost its post office and in the mid 1950s its school
merged with other Shelby
County schools. The population of seventy-five continues to be
used in 2000. |
