History in a Pecan Shell

Initial settlement occured around 1840 but things didn't develop until the 1870s when a wagon train of settlers arrived from South Carolina and a post office opened in 1873. By 1884 the population was estimated at 300 and the town had a school and three churches. The population was 100 for the 1890 census and just 131 ten years later. The post office closed in 1925 and the population remained at 100 from the mid 1920s through the late 40s when it declined to a mere 30. Oilfields were discovered near Brushy Creek which may account for a boost to 200 residents in the mid 1960s. But by 1970 it was back down to 70 people where it remained through the 80s. The figure for 2000 is 50 residents.
