History in
a Pecan Shell
With all of the stories connected with the naming of
various Texas towns, Choice's name was decided by the U.S. Postal
authorities. (See Bob Bowman's Town
Names.) The town was founded around 1904 and the post office was
granted about that same time. The population was estimated at 100
around 1914 when it reportedly had a sawmill and two competing grocery
stores.
The community was under that familiar curse of being too close to
the county seat to develope on its own, and the population droped
to a mere 25 in the mid 1920s. It actually grew (!) during the Great
Depression and ended the 30s back at 100. It peaked after WWII
with an estimated 150 residents and then started to decline. From
the 60s through the 80s, Choice had just 20 people and it's added
just one person to that estimate for the 1990 and 2000 census. |
