History in
a Pecan Shell
The town was named
after local landowner William M. Goodrich when the Houston, East and
West Texas Railway arrived in Polk
County in the 1870s.
Goodrich was granted a post office sometime prior to 1882 but growth
was practically nil until Wilson W. Armitage built a store at the
site. In 1900 Goodrich had a school, gin, with bith grist and sawmill.
After 1900 Goodrich added other businesses even while the local timber
industry was declining - forcing people to reestablish cotton and
vegetable crops. The Goodrich oil field was discovered in 1941 and
subsequent discoveries have helped Goodrich and Polk
County.
The population which was estimated at 200 in the mid 1920s increased
slowly to 350 in the mid 1980s. It was 271 in 2010. |
