History in
a Pecan Shell
Titled on a land grant dating from 1835, Gusher came into being in
1904 shortly after two of East
Texas’ biggest oil strikes – the Saratoga and Batson Fields. (See
Batson, Texas) The fields, discovered
in 1901 and 1903 (respectively) made Gusher’s prospects look good.
A post office opened in 1904 but there were few buyers for the town
lots. The post office closed in 1906 and by the end of the decade
the site was deserted. |
