History on
a Pinhead
The town had been
settled sometime prior to 1900 but information is scarce. It did develop
a store, church and school although no population figures are available.
It managed to survive the Great Depression, but the post war opportunities
proved too tempting to residents and they drifted on in search of
jobs. All that remains in North Chapel today are the church and a
few dispersed homes.
Photographer's Note:
"This may be the old town site refereed to as North Chapel by
TexGenes.com. Located on FM 1252 near Chad Loop.
On current maps this church is listed as North Chapel Church. All
the signs on site name it as New Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. Another
site across the street is marked on the maps as the North Chapel School.
The school area is fenced off and I was unable to tell if any of the
buildings there were part of the original African American School.
I have attached a picture of what you can see from the road courtesy
of Google maps satellite images. According to a resident I spoke with,
the North Chapel Church has not been in use for some time due to many
residents moving away. We were chatting through rolled down windows
of our vehicles so I did not linger long enough to get any more information.
Internet searches turn up empty handed..." - Maryanne
