History in
a Pecan Shell
Nelson Henry Rice brought his family here in 1865 and for sometime
the community was called Rice. The location was chosen since
it was halfway between Hortense and
Leggett. A school and church were
built, but when the time came to apply for a post office, the name
submitted was Ollie.
The name is thought to come from a female member of the Rice clan.
Perhaps the familiar form of the name Olivia. The first postmaster
was David A. Rice. By the late 1940s, Ollie had been dropped from
maps and the post office closed. |
