San
Saba was settled by Anglos in 1839. The city is bordered on the north
and east by the Colorado River, and the San Saba River bisects it.
San Saba County
has more than 500 miles of running streams, more than any other county
in Texas. Brine Springs supported the C.S.A. Salt Works on the Colorado
River. Brine Springs was used as an infirmary and health resort, and
increased operations during the Civil War for the men, cavalry horses
and mule teams. To pump the brine from the springs a horse operated
a lift that filled troughs on a forty-five-foot high scaffold. Cedar
boughs placed in the troughs concentrated the brine, which filtered
into iron kettles and boiled a bushel of salt out of fifty bushels
of brine.
Pecan trees abound and San
Saba is famous for this crop.
