Aztec
Theatre My
memories of the "Aztec" are growing up down the resaca in the "Jardin" neighborhood.
We never really had any money back then, so for the weekends, we'd camp-out in
the park just across the water and catch fish for dinner. I remember my Grandmother,
God rest her soul, took me to "bailes" a couple of times on the rooftop….Oh what
a priviledge it would have been to have seen it in its heyday!! I think my mother
has a charcoal drawing I did back when I was around 15 years old. If I find it,
I'll try and scan it and send it to you guys! Thanks for the memories! - George

Zephyr,
Texas 7-31-06 Dear TE, Thanks for providing pics
of the town buildings and the bit of history on Zephyr, TX. My husband's gt. grnadmother
was born there 19 May 1893 and named Ell Vance Cotten, dau. of W.B. Cotten. She
married Percy Eugene Bawcom 24 Dec. 1911 in Rising Star - my next town to look-up!
Ell died 26 Jul. 1923 in Wichita Falls, TX. from heart problems & is buried in
Rose Mount Cemetery. Such a short life, wasn't it? I copied your article on Zephyr
to add to my family history notebook. Thanks so much for placing this article
for all to see on your website. - Sonja Dodge, Pampa, Texas, July 31, 2006

Phillips wrote that she had contacted all of the families connected with the victims
except the Van Winkles. I believe Mr. Van Winkle was related to John Smart, on
Mr. Smart's mother's side. I am a Shumake descendent, but not direct from the
one lynched. Does anyone know anything about the 13 year old male? - Lois Rodgers,

Lovelady,
Texas
7-31-06 Subject:
Jesse Dean Mills, WWII Dear
TE, I'm hoping someone can offer some information about a family connection that
we have with Lovelady Tx, specifically Jesse Dean Mills who was born approx 1917.
Please see the attached photo. Jesse lived in Lovelady up until about 1941 or
1942, at which time he enlisted, or was called up, for service in the US Army.
Jesse was a Motor Mechanic by trade and worked for his sister Ola May's husband.
Jesse served in the Medical Corps as a medic and was posted to the Pacific theatre
where he spent some time in Melbourne and at the US Army Hospital in Brisbane
Australia until approximately November 1944. The CO of the unit was a Major Coulson.
Even though this is such a long time ago we would be very pleased to hear from
anyone that can pass on any information. Regards and Thanks, Tony Mills, Wynne

A.B. Kerr and Son Token A few years ago I was metal detecting at Gibtown,Texas
in Jack County. I found a token from the A.B. Kerr and Sons store in Muldoon,
Texas. Sure would be a great story on how the token made the 300 mile trip from
Muldoon to Gibtown, probably by horse and wagon. - Joe Meyers, July 24, 2006
San
Saba, Texas 7-25-06
I recently saw someone ask what was in San Saba that his distant relative would
have gone there for. If Im not mistaken, it was in San Saba, I saw, a few blocks
from town, the old railroad tracks, and there was the most beautiful abandoned
hotel right next to the tracks, and across the street the most beautiful marble
fronted deserted bank building. Truely romantic and enchanting. I dont know what
it is about Texas, but what a place!!!!! - John Dean, July 24, 2006
Grapeland,
Texas 7-23-06 Subject: CLARENCE RAY CHAFFIN
Can you please help me? I'm trying to find the family of Clarence Ray
Chappin. He was killed in action in Vietnam on 10/29/68 and was from Grapeland.
We would like to get a picture of Clarence for our memorial page, and for the
Vietnam Memorial Wall. I served with the 1/5 Mech, 25th Inf Div. as did Clarence.
There is only one Chaffin listed in the white pages and that number is out of
order. Ive tried everything to find his family with no luck. I would appreciate
your help. Thank you - Denis McDonough July 21, 2006 Email: Denis1146@aol.com
Nixon,
Texas 7-23-06 My
mother, who is currently 94 years old, was brought to Nixon in 1914, at age 3.
She resided there untill 1921. Her aunt was Dr. Ella Ware who was the first female
graduate of the University of Texas Medical School. Dr. Ware practiced her entire
career in Stockdale and delivered most all of the children in Wilson County, and
many in the Nixon area during those years. Mother's father, Harry W. Seely was
general manager for Mr. Campbell's lumber yard (I believe that Mr. Campbell was
also the town banker). Her dad also was proprietor of his own grocery store in
downtown Nixon ("H.W. Seely Grocery" --"Staples and Fancy Foods").
She
has many wonderful stories (and pictures) of Nixon and the surrounding areas.
Among my mom's abundant memories is one involving the very first airplane to ever
land in Nixon (actually, it was forced down by a mechanical failure). She says
that school was let out so the children could go and see the "flying machine"
and to be able to talk to the aviator. She currently resides in Leon Valley (N.W.
San Antonio) and will celebrate her 95th birthday this fall. She would love to
revisit the old hometown and to participate in the centennial happenings. She
is in good health and her mind is still very sharp. She has so many interesting
tales to relate of that wonderful part of Texas. I think that she would be a most
valuable asset to your centennial celebration. Thank you. - Jack Steen Myrtle

Milam County Texas There
was a man named Bigfoot Ray or John Bigfoot Ray who was killed in a bar fight
in Rosebud, Texas.
I don't know the year but it was probably in the 1920's. He was part Native American.
He was from Mississippi or Alabama. Someone said he was buried in an Indian cemetery
on the way to Gause, Texas but I
don't know if that is correct. Would anyone have a source that might make mention
of a Bigfoot Ray or a John Bigfoot Ray? Thanks, Ross Smith, July 19, 2006.

Ghost
town of Glazier 7-20-06 My dad, Richard King,
was born April 10, 1947 in Perryton, Texas. There was only one doctor and one
nurse at the hospital because all other medical personel had been sent to help
with the tornado victims of Glazier. - Sharon Thomas, Pampa, Texas, July 20,

Egypt,
Texas 7-14-06 My grandparents once lived in Egypt,
Texas where my paternal grandfather owned a meat market. This market stood close
to a saloon which ordered sausages from the S.M. Gupton shop. In order to increase
his sales of beer the saloon keeper would implore my grandfather with these words.
"Make that sausage salty Buff". - Hank Gupton, Anahuac, Texas, July 12, 2006
Cresent,
Texas 7-14-06 Near
Wharton there was, or is a community called Cresent. In the late 1950s they still
had a junior high school and for all I know still may have one. Our little basketball
team of Ganado Jr. High "Braves" once traveled over there for a game. The boys
from Cresent looked older than our boys did and in fact had a little facial hair
but they were as tight as could be and missed shots, allowing our team to win
the game going away. Does anyone know if Cresent still has a Jr. High School?

Peacock,
Texas 7-13-06 Subject: WW2 Paratrooper from
Peacock, Texas I am an English tour guide who takes people to visit WW2
battlefields in Normandy. I now live permanently in Normandy and I am trying to
research the story of a WW2 paratrooper from Peacock, Texas who died in the house
where I now live on June 8th 1944. His name was Ray C. Kennedy and originally
came from Peacock in Texas. I know from your online article that this is a very
small town and I am currently trying to research Mr. Kennedy's story in order
to hopefully, one day, publish it. I know Ray Kennedy was born in 1917 and his
parents (Surilla and Mr. C. E. Kennedy) lived in Peacock at the time of his death.
Is there any resource you can think of in order to further my research and to
possibly, maybe, trace any family he may have in Texas today? Many thanks in advance
for any help you may be able to provide. Kind regards Stuart Robertson Normandy,

Cemeteries Subject:
Rogers Hill Cemetery
7-9-06 Rogers Hill Cemetery is located on the Eastern
edge of Austin on what was part of Capt James Rogers land grant. The graves date
back to the mid-1800's. It contains many gravesites of the Rogers and Burleson
families and their branches. I have asked [for assistance] for a HISTORICAL CEMETERY
designation [from someone] involved with the Save The Old Cemeteries organization.
I would appreciate any advice and/or assistance. My wife and I will be buried
there as were my many relatives. - Sam William Rogers, Jr, D.D.S., Houston,

7-9-06 I enjoyed looking at photos and postcards of
Texas RR Depots on your website. However, in [Mike Cox's article] "Amarillo Symphony"

is actually the Fort Worth & Denver RR Depot. The Pecos Valley Southern RR runs
south from Pecos, Texas (towards Balmorhea.) - Clif Jones, Bastrop, Texas,

Eliasville,
Texas 7-4-06
Attached please find two photos from Eliasville. My family history is sketchy
at best; however, I am the great, great grandson of Elias De Long. One of the
pictures attached is supposedly Elias with his wife Malissa Sue. Also attached
is a picture of the De Long Ward school from 1929. My father was born in Eliasville,
and I believe he is in the picture somewhere. Thanks, James D. Allen, Son of
Milton O’Neal Allen, who was the son of Fred and Vernie Allen. Fred was son of
Tabitha De Long and Andrew J. Allen. Tabitha was daughter of Elias and Malissa

Clay
County Courthouse 7-4-06 I have greatly enjoyed
many "fantasy vacations" employing your website. I grew up in Clay County, and
in fact most of my family still lives there. The county courthouse is the central
figure in the largest social event in the county: Pioneer Reunion, held every
year in September. There are arts and crafts booths on the courthouse square and
a float parade on Friday and Saturday mornings that passes on both sides of the
courthouse, not to mention the fiddling contest in the old bandstand, and heaven
only knows what all else!
I have many fond memories of climbing the staircases
in the courthouse, and of sliding down the big slide on the Main Street side of
the building. I believe the real purpose of this slide was as a fire escape, but
the kids of Clay County thought it was there as a playground for us. I was saddened
when the old slide was removed a few years ago during a renovation of the courthouse.
The rumor was that it was a safety issue, and considering that this next generation
was using the slide the same way we did, I'm sure it was. But we sure do miss
that old slide! - Elizabeth Moore, July 02, 2006 more
