"Dick

On a Monday morning at school, one of the students held us spellbound
by telling us what he had seen on the weekend in Marlin. He and his
father were walking down the street and they happened upon some people
acting out a scene. They were attired in suits and ties and all were
carrying guns as they ran from building to building, shooting at each
other.
When they were wrapping every thing up and getting ready to leave,
our narrator said his father asked what they were doing. He learned
that they were acting out a "Dick Tracy" comic strip. Someone asked
the storyteller why it had to be acted out when it was a drawn strip.
His reply was quick and authoritative. It was because the law required
that every comic strip had to be portrayed by live actors prior to
being illustrated.
The bell rang for the start of school before anyone got a chance to
ask the big question. Of all the big cities in the country, New York,
Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston or Los Angeles, why did the comic strip
industry choose Marlin, a city with a population less than 5,000,
as the center of the universe? I'm sure our informed one would have
had an answer for that too.
