The McDow Hole
Page 7

The three boys drove over dirt roads from Stephenville for what seemed like eternity before reaching the dry creek-bed south of Dublin. They sat awaiting the ghost for about two hours and were just about to leave when suddenly, before their very eyes appeared a misty form about 100 feet up the creek, near a large rock.

Michael reported the form to materialize as if out of some Hollywood picture. “We could easily make out the form of a woman dressed in a long pleated skirt with a long sleeve blouse,” he said. “At times her face would almost come into complete focus.” “She looked sort of plain and stood there as if to be curious of our intentions.”

Then she disappeared only to reappear a few minutes later on the opposite side of the creek and a little bit closer to the truck. It was then that the boys decided it was time to head back to town before the ghost decided to crawl into the cab with them.

The event left Michael a bit shaken. Over the years he claims that he hasn’t told very many people of the event because it is so un-nerving and strange. The actual sighting of a spirit was a bit more than he expected on his nightly adventure.

Most who have witnessed the ghost have usually been those who have not sought her, therefore, they tend not to speak of what they have witnessed.

Perhaps, the ghost is actually the spirit of a pioneer who came before the Papworths or the spirits of those unfortunate enough to be hung from the old pecan tree in the Papworth yard. There is certainly an array of possibilities in this haunted hollow.

The area is now posted “No Trespassing” which is probably a good thing in that it may preserve the creek and it’s natural beauty. Perhaps, Jenny Papworth, or whatever lingers there likes it that way.

The McDow Hole has been an eerie and tragic place over time. It is obviously stained with the blood of many traumatic events resulting in the senseless deaths of many innocent people.

With so many sightings over so many years coupled with documented sightings of those who died there, it is obvious that this story far exceeds the status of mere myth or urban legend. Thus the McDow will always be a very peculiar place. Perhaps it is one of those places where bad things just tend to happen.

In the event you ever find yourself at the McDow, take warning that there is no explanation to the strange events that have taken place on its bloodstained ground in the last 130 years or so. Nor is there any pattern or consistency to the behavior of the spirit or spirits that linger there. And it is certain that no one knows when or how the ghost will make itself known or what, pray-tell, it will do to you if it finds you there.
