Houston had two Carnegie Libraries.

The main library was built in 1899 at a cost of $65,000.

The branch library is listed as "segragated" in "Carnegie Libraries Across America" by Theodore Jones.

Both buildings have been demolished.

By accident today I ended up across the street from the Carnegie Branch Library (OK... I didn't have an idea where it was located - and just looked over and saw the building.) So here's a couple of photos - of the side of the building that fronts out on Quitman Street (the purple side)..... and the front of the building that opens into a park. - Teri Brown, January 01, 2005
