Jim Wells County
Jail
Photographer's
Note:
"The current Jim Wells County jail just north of the courthouse
in Alice, Texas.
According to the book "Wanted: Historic County Jails of Texas" by
Edward A. Blackburn Jr., the original portion of this county jail,
the county's first, was built in 1926 with a subsequent addition in
1961. A two-story frame city jail was built in 1912, but when the
county was organized the same year, county prisoners were sent to
Nueces County and
the city jail was used as a holding cell.
A plaque on the outside of the jail states that the original building
was built in 1912, although Mr. Blackburn's book states that the 1912
jail was razed when the 1926 jail was built." - Terry
