Stan
Gotlieb and Diana Ricci are self-described "Zocalo lizards" of Oaxaca. Stan and
Diana found each other in Oaxaca, and have made themselves very much at home there
in one of the last regions considered to be the "real" Mexico. The writing
is a blend of Oscar Lewis, The People's Guide to Mexico, and Consumer
Reports. The photographs conjure up Marquez' magical Macondo. Together it's
an honest, unvarnished portrayal of the expatriate lifestyle and a glimpse of
contemporary Mexican life. Actually, there is a slight patina of varnish - but
just a thin coat. Think of a glazed mango. This is practical information
furnished by experienced hands that work without deadline. They know the region
inside and out. From real estate to medical care to life in the rural villages,
it's all here. Curious, observant, and (somewhat) wry, it's hard to imagine better
hosts. And hosts they indeed are - since they also conduct orientation classes
for the recently arrived. Give Letters a try. We've baited the
hook with a few representative letters courtesy of Stan and Diana. Letters shares
two important elements of Texas Escapes - a deep appreciation of place and a desire
to share that appreciation. In 1999 they began www.realoaxaca.com
to share these essays and photos of deepest Mexico. Consider subscribing to the
Oaxaca / Mexico Newsletter. Stan says "It's informative, entertaining, and inexpensive."
We have a word for descriptions like that - understatement. Subscriptions pay
for the website, phone bill, and travel expenses. "Letters
