A
day ago, I was outside, watering. It is dry again in Texas. We always
want for rain. We are on stage 3 water rationing, which means you
can only water with sprinklers once a week. You can however water
by hand anytime you want. I have not used the sprinklers yet, hoping
we would get some heavy Spring rains to start the grass greening
up again from winter.
I do use the hose to hand water. It keeps the shrubs and
flowers going and
gives
me something to do with my spare time. There is nothing like holding
a water hose to make you feel important and busy. Like you are actually
doing something. Watering also gives you time to think, as there
is little else that can be done with a hose in your hand. You cannot
eat, you cannot write, and you cannot watch TV. About all you can
do is stand there like a hydrant.
But to continue...I was watering the shrubs around the front of
the house.
We have a flowerbed that wraps around the front. On the corner is
a Pittosporum bush that is low to the ground because it is a dwarf.
I know we are not supposed to use the word "Dwarf" anymore, but
that's what it is. Anyway, as I was watering it, (lost in a thought
about Prune Kolaches) I noticed that some of the branches by my
foot were shaking. Aha, a lizard I thought!
Lots of time, there are lizards that hang out in this flowerbed.
I like to watch them and kind of cultivate them. They are interesting,
but don't say much. They are mostly deep thinkers like myself.
You can tell they are thinking because they blink their eyes every
so often.
like myself.
So the branches of the bush were moving, and I thought I would spray
some water on that spot to see if a lizard would crawl out. I poured
the water to it and lo and behold.... a baby RABBIT jumped out!
He ran out of there so fast, he was just a blur. A racin' fuzzball!
Over to the neighbor's he ran lickity split, then down the side
yard and into the alley. Last I seen of him, he was hightailing
it (pun intended) toward the west!
I had to laugh at the occurrence. Imagine that bunny's surprise
getting a sudden shower like that, and it wasn't even Saturday.
Course I don't know that rabbits know what day of the week it is,
but assuming.
This baby was no bigger than a baby pup, but wow did it take off.
I came in and told the wife about it. She got mad. Said I should
be watering the flowers, not the rabbits.
I meant no harm. I think that cottontails are cute. Dumb but cute.
And now we have one to talk about at the supper table. It's always
good to have a rabbit story in your repertoire, ya know. It's those
little things in life that count, including little rabbits.
I hope you enjoyed this here rabbit story. I know you were expecting
more
but what the heck. It's the best I can do. What do you expect from
a guy
who likes to hold his hose and sprinkle on the bushes.
