The
folks of my growing
and raising are gone,
disputes and differences
all said and done
Years ran together
passed quickly and then,
on a wing and a prayer
a sudden amen
We would not listen
to what we were told,
realizing
what wisdom
comes from the old
They gave us council
clear
paths to success,
in one ear, out the other
disregarded at best
Advice never taken
we hedged our own bets,
had we just listened
far fewer regrets
On a wing and a prayer
we played out the game,
so many tomorrows
that just never came
There is no solace
in being among
the young and the restless
the prodigal son
Now with their passing
we sing the same song,
too late to tell them
they were right all along
