THE EYE IS HUNGRY

The eye is hungry
for beauty
always searching
for the thing
that will let it
rise above
the plain and ordinary
men painted caves
climbed mountains
built cathedrals
to satisfy this yearning
splendid in its shining
the gnawing urge
to exit the swamp
find a stone
and carve a statue
make mud
into a jar.
