When
my mother got a garage door opener
it was something new
a marvelous invention she could not fathom
magical and mysterious
it was as if an alien spaceship had landed
but it did not take long before she loved the thing
it made everything so much easier and convenient
no longer having to get out of the car
and fight with that heavy garage door
especially in the rain
and so the garage opener
became her favorite thing
expanded her life
and literally opened new doors for her
now I think back on it and wonder
if the man who invented the door opener
knows what joy and happiness he gave
with his creation
it is so common today
we don't even think about it
yet what a gift he gave
to little old ladies
who felt the burden of
pulling in the driveway
and dealing with that giant door
now they could not wait
to push
that remote button
and watch with amazement
as the door went automatically up
and disappeared into the beams
worlds opened up
with the click of a single button
the whirring sound of the track
was music to their ears
with a wrinkled smile
they gained new confidence
they had power
in the palm of their hands.
