Horsepen Creek

by David Knape

The little creek winds
itself around my neighborhood
giving us a place to walk
a place to let go of all the clutter
of city life

the city tried to tame it
channeled it out
built concrete embankments
dozed down its trees
trying to make it go a certain way

but the little creek persisted
kept running
rejuvenating

willows came back
vegetation returned
and all manner of wildflowers
lined its banks
even fish found their way back up

and now the little creek
is still a creek
becoming more natural
with each passing season

all things come back to nature
given enough time
even concrete cannot keep
a flower from growing up
between the cracks

or keep a creek
from being a creek.
