MUD PIES

by David Knape

Mud pies
are always apropos
when down memory lane
we care to go

At 4 or 5
playing side by side
after rain it gave us
mud for pies

We even ate some
that's no lie
when sisters served up
fresh mud pies

Children today
are none the wise
don't know the recipe
for making pies

Fun in the mud
on hands and face
a forgotten art
mud goes to waste

And lacking is
the fun supplied
kids miss the making
of mud pies.
