Ole
Star is out to pasture
he's got those gimpy legs,
with a touch of arthritis
done seen his better days,
a spark
of fire's still in him though
his spirit isn't gone,
still we thought he earned retirement
before his days were done
He worked under many a cowboy
chased many a frisky cow,
sometimes we even used him
to pull the garden plow,
the kids loved ropin' and ridin'
they learned upon his back,
he was so easy goin'
they quickly got the knack
Even mama used to hitch him
to the wagon now and then,
when she set out for town on Saturday
to bring some groceries in,
seems Star was always with us
in our
ranch history,
the reason we all love him
he's part of the family
Ole Star was never nervous
his quirks were only few,
puttin' up with kids and greenhorns
patience is what he knew,
so we don't wanna sell him
to some dog food company,
cain't put away a kind old friend
who served so faithfully
We put him out to pasture
check on him from time to time,
bring him hay and water
he seems to do just fine,
take him oats and apples
currycomb his tough old hide,
he's like a family member
only one that you can ride
I had many horses in my day
and one thing I will grant,
the best horse ain't the fastest
but the one with common sense,
so for all his years of service
from all the ranch hands that he knew,
ole Star is out to pasture
it's the least that we can do.
