A
poet does not take vacations
he works non-stop
on shaping words and ideas
he has no union
no benefits
he never punches out
his only reward an occasional Aahh
his time never his own
to fritter away
he is always thinking
working on the next poem
even at night
when most are sleeping
a poem keeps nudging him
from sleep, saying
write me, write me
he can only comply
the muse is boss
a stern taskmaster
expecting performance
and punctuality.
