Christmas
over
happiness gets put away
when down come the lights
the tree
the garland
the dazzling sparkles
all stuffed back
in boxes
for another year
decorations stored
in the back of dark closets
how sad they must feel
when they only knew
light and joy
ornaments
teeming with family history
held delicately then
wrapped in tissue paper
carefully put away
each holding a memory
one by one
Christmas decorations go back
into their boxes
with a flood of sad regret
excitement turns into melancholy
the specialness of Christmas
fades away
the days become average
resume routine
we recall moments
with family and friends
as today becomes yesterday
we are another year older
and wonder how many more to go
as we pack our thoughts away
on this
the saddest day of the year.
